Licensure Requirements for a Salesperson

• Minimum age of 18
• Complete 40 hours of pre-license education through an approved school
• Must be able to provide a valid social security number
• If you are not a Michigan resident, you must submit a Consent to Service of Process form
• Apply for license
• Pass the salesperson exam

Licensure Requirements for an Associate Broker

• Minimum age of 18
• Complete 90 hours of pre-license education through an approved school
• Must have spent at least 3 years as a full-time licensed real estate agent or worked full-time for at least 3 years in a related field (The latter qualification is subject to approval by the state of Michigan)
• Pass the broker exam
• Apply for License

2. Apply for License

• After you submit your application, you will receive an email with instructions on registering for the exam

3. Pass the salesperson exam (See below for more information)
4. Provide proof that you have an employing broker upon your license becoming active (For details on this process, refer to page 2 of the Michigan Salesperson Licensing Guide

Step by Step Guide (Associate Broker)

1. Complete 90 hours of pre-license education through an approved school

Exam Info

Salesperson: The exam costs $79 and is administered on a computer in multiple choice format. There are 115 scored questions and 5-10 pre-test questions that do not affect your score. There is no distinction made between scored questions and pre-test questions on the exam. They are all mixed in together, so it is important that you answer each question carefully. 

You must achieve a score of at least 70% to pass. You will have 3 hours to complete the exam.

Broker/Associate Broker: The exam costs $79 and is administered on a computer in multiple choice format. In addition to standard multiple choice, the broker exam contains scenario-based questions with more than 4 possible answers to choose from. For an outline on what this looks like, refer to page 10 of the Michigan Candidate Handbook. 

There are 115 scored questions and 5-10 pre-test questions that do not affect your score. There is no distinction made between scored questions and pre-test questions on the exam. They are all mixed in together, so it is important that you answer each question carefully. 

You must achieve a score of at least 75% to pass. You will have 3 ½ hours to complete the exam.
